Kim Norwood, professor of law, addresses Soldan High School students as part of a new collaboration between law students and Mound City Bar Association lawyers to encourage juniors and seniors at Soldan to pursue going to law school. During the fall semester, law students at Norwood's "Race, Education & the Legal Profession" course participated in the new program, which Norwood calls Law Exposure and Professionalism Strategies (LEAPS).

Rankings by news media

U.S. News & World Report for 2008 places 19 Washington University graduate and professional programs in their top-10 rankings. The School of Medicine is ranked number three in the nation, and 12 of the departments and programs in medicine are ranked in the top 10. The George Warren Brown School of Social Work is ranked number one in the nation, and three Arts & Sciences areas are ranked in the top 10. The School of Law as ranked 19th in the nation; the school’s clinical training program ranked number six, and its trial advocacy program was number four. The Department of Biomedical Engineering is ranked number 17, despite having only been founded in 1997. The Olin School’s Executive MBA program ranks 16, and the part-time MBA is 12.

In U.S. News’ undergraduate category for 2007, Washington U. is ranked 12th among national universities. The Olin Business School undergraduate program ranks 12th.

Financial Times ranked the Washington University-Fudan University EMBA program seventh in the world and number one in China. BusinessWeek ranked the MBA program 27th in the nation and the Executive MBA program in the top 17. Architecture was ranked fifth nationally by Design Intelligence.

According to the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, the University ranks 8th in the nation in its black student graduation rate.

Rankings by independent organizations

In two separate national ratings — black student college graduation rates and the number of National Merit Scholars in the freshman class — Washington University ranks in the top 10.

The University ranked fourth in the nation in the number of National Merit Scholars in this academic year’s freshman class. The University has also been ranked 23rd for medium-sized schools in the number of alumni currently serving in the Peace Corps.
