Alumni and Development

Alumni & Development Programs are dedicated to serving the needs of all Washington University graduates and strengthening their connections to the University community.

All alumni are members of the Alumni Association, represented by the Alumni Board of Governors. The chair and executive vice chair are ex officio members of the University’s Board of Trustees. Alumni are found worldwide:

  • 113,946 alumni addresses were on record in July 2008;
  • 34,107—just under 33 percent—live and work in the St. Louis area.
  • 84,560 reside elsewhere in Missouri, in the other 49 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories;
  • 5,655 reside in 145 countries outside the U.S., including 8 provinces in Canada and 6 in Australia.

Washington University Clubs are active in 51 cities around the world. All programs are available without alumni dues—some may require an event fee—and nearly every activity is open to parents and friends as well.

Top-ranked again for fiscal management

In 2008, Charity Navigator, considered by many to be America's premier independent charity evaluator, gave Washington University its seventh consecutive four-star rating for its commitment to fiscal responsibility and its ability to efficiently manage and steward the resources it receives. Since Charity Navigator's inception in 2001, only 2% of the more than 5,000 charities which have been rated have received at least six consecutive four-star ratings. Washington University has been accorded the four-star rating every year, one of just 18 institutions of higher education to earn that evaluation. As Ken Berger, president and chief executive officer of Charity Navigator wrote, that indicates "...that Washington University in St. Louis consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America." He continued, "This 'exceptional' designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Washington University in St. Louis from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust." It is estimated that Charity Navigator influenced over $10 billion in charitable gifts in 2007.
